Ascendant may rise again.
Starz is in the early stages of developing a TV series based on what was once intended as the fourth and final installment of the Divergent film franchise, EW has confirmed.
Lionsgate previously released three movies based on Veronica Roth’s post-apocalyptic YA books about a society where people are divided into factions based on their personality types: 2014’s Divergent, 2015’s Insurgent, and 2016’s Allegiant. Though the first two movies were solid box office performers, the third was a critical and commercial disappointment.
News broke in July 2016 that Lionsgate was considering moving the series to the small screen, and the company acquired Starz in December.
Adam Cozad is attached to pen the Ascendant TV project and executive produce alongside Lee Toland Krieger. The two will be on familiar ground, as they were previously set to work on the film version of Ascendant. It’s unclear whether any of the Divergent film cast, such Shailene Woodley, Theo James, and Ansel Elgort, would be involved in the TV series.
Deadline Hollywood first reported the news.
