ABC is throwing back The Little Mermaid.
The network has scrapped its plans for a TV musical adaptation of the beloved Disney tale this fall, EW has confirmed, though ABC is hoping to take viewers under the sea in 2018 instead.
“We are postponing the Little Mermaid Live special,” an ABC spokesperson said in a statement to EW. “We love the idea of doing a live musical and want to make it wonderful. The project is so unique that we are making best efforts to do it next year and want to give it all the attention it deserves.”
Despite announcing the production, scheduling it to air on Oct. 3, and even building sets, the musical has been postponed, USA Today first reported. The production’s cost was speculated to be an issue. No cast was announced either.
The move comes on the heels of NBC postponing its plans to make a Bye, Bye Birdie live musical; NBC also said it hopes to revisit that project in 2018.
Still in the works: Fox’s production of Rent and NBC’s productions of Jesus Christ Superstar and A Few Good Men.
