Season 2 of The Girlfriend Experience is finally peeking out from under the covers.
Ahead of the project’s debut at the 2017 Toronto Film Festival in September, the Amy Seimetz/Lodge Kerrigan-created anthology series — adapted from Steven Soderbergh’s 2009 film of the same name — has unveiled its first (slightly NSFW) official trailer, featuring two female characters suspended in the middle of nowhere (in very different contexts).
The first portion of the clip sees a young woman (presumably a high-class escort, as both the namesake film and the Riley Keogh-fronted season 1 chronicled the lives of sex workers) sitting on a plush sofa as a suited man drones on about “free-loaders” in American society.
“All they do is take. They produce nothing of any worth. How many people on minimum wage have actually produced a f—king job?” He asks his companion before asking if he’s boring her. “No, not at all. I’m right here with you,” she responds, closing her eyes and turning her head as he begins kissing her neck.
Cut to a lengthy tracking shot of a barren, desert location, with Carmen Ejogo’s character providing a haunting voiceover about her contentious past.
“Don’t get me wrong. I like to f–k… but sometimes I pretend to like it more than I really do,” she says. “I met a man who took care of everything… he’d give me nice things, and then I’d want more nice things, then I’d say nice things to get nice things, and I’d feel like I was owed nice things, and I’d stop being honest about how I really felt. Then he’d start saying horrible things… all the time, and it all started sounding like white noise to me… it wasn’t normal at all. And here we are.”
Before ending with the sound of a gunshot, Ejogo’s character comes into view, as two men use a metal detector to scour the sand behind her.
The Girlfriend Experience‘s second season, starring a new cast of characters (Ejogo, Anna Friel, and Louisa Krause) in a fresh story, is set for a Nov. 5 debut on Starz. Watch the first trailer above.
