How does Mindy Kaling hide her growing belly for 'Mindy Project'? With 'lots of stretch.'

It’s too bad Mindy Kaling and her alter ego Mindy Lahiri weren’t pregnant at the same time.

Back in Season 3 of The Mindy Project, Kaling’s character was expecting. But, now in the final month of shooting Season 6 of her show, Kaling really has a baby bump — but her character doesn’t.

So now Kaling’s costume designer Salvador Perez has the challenge of creating a belly and also hiding Kaling’s real growing tummy.

“So far, so good. She doesn’t show yet,” Perez said Thursday in Beverly Hills, at the preview of his exhibit, The Mindy Project: Six Seasons of Style on Thursday. “We have another four weeks of shooting and I’m hoping to get away with it. I’m buying lots of stretch.”

According to Kaling, who was at the exhibit to support her friend and colleague, shooting the final season of the show is “getting a little sentimental and sad, actually. We have less than a month of shooting. So that’s why Sal is pulling out all the stops for the last few episodes for costumes,” she said.

Though the five months pregnant Kaling glowed in a floral dress and matching shoes at the event, Perez said that the star wasn’t so happy a few years ago when she was wearing a maternity pillow for TV.

“I had to make her a pregnancy pad (to wear under her clothes), and she hated the pregnancy pad. I’m like, ‘This isn’t my idea, you wrote this,'” he said.

Perez’s exhibit opens at the Paley Center on Aug. 26. The sixth and final season of The Mindy Project airs on Hulu Sept. 12.
