Kermit the Frog's new voice sounds a lot like old Kermit

Meet the new Kermit. Sounds the same as the old Kermit.

Matt Vogel, who replaced longtime Muppet puppeteer Steve Whitmire as the voice of beloved Kermit, showed off his chops for the first time this week.

Walt Disney Studios published a “Muppets Thought of the Week” video online to YouTube and social media platforms on Monday. Entertainment Weekly confirmed that this marked Vogel’s debut in the role.

Kermit’s thought for the day: “Dreams are how we figure out where we want to go. Life is how we get there…I’m headed this way.”

Whitmire, who took over voicing Kermit the Frog after Muppets founder Jim Henson died in 1990, was fired after 27 years in July.  Whitmire wrote an emotional blog post in response to news of his replacement.

“For me, the Muppets are not just a job, or a career, or even a passion,” Whitmire wrote on his personal blog site, titled Muppet Pundit. “They are a calling,”

Our review: it’s very froggy.

The comments section of the YouTube page gave Vogel mixed reviews in his frog voice debut.

“I know not everyone is going to love it,” wrote user The RealSullyG. “But Matt really needs the encouragement at this point. These are some big shoes…or flippers to fill.”
