USA TODAY’s Straight Up Hollywood travels far and wide for this week’s entertainment podcast, venturing into a Beverly Hills hotel ballroom to take in the Television Critics Association summer press tour and visiting a Vancouver arena for a Lady Gaga concert.
TV reporter Bill Keveney (@billkev) checks in from the press tour, sharing snippets of interviews with Future Man executive producer Seth Rogen and star Josh Hutcherson, who are teaming on the new Hulu comedy, and Sarah Silverman, who’s prepping her fall talk show for the streaming service.
Keveney also provides a heads up on anticipated fall shows, including CBS All Access’s Star Trek: Discovery, HBO’s The Deuce, with James Franco playing brothers, and the long-awaited return of Curb Your Enthusiasm. Imagine what Larry David can do with six years of new aggravations.
Entertainment reporter Carly Mallenbaum (@ThatGirlCarly) crossed the border to take in the opening stop on Gaga’s Joanne World Tour. She discusses Lady Gaga’s songs, elaborate stages and costumes and an enthusiastic crowd of Little Monsters.
Finally, Keveney explains Amazon Prime Video’s Comrade Detective — a faux 1980s Romanian cop series infused with Communist propaganda — with the help of what he learned talking to Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who provide English-language dubbing on the complicated but intriguing project.
