If Katie Aselton was going to sing in front of Adam Levine — Maroon 5 guy by day, The Voice judge by night — a deal needed to be struck on the set of the female-fronted ensemble comedy Fun Mom Dinner.
“He promised me he wasn’t going to judge me and I took him at his word,” says the Legion and The League actress, who stars in the movie (in theaters and video on demand Friday) alongside Toni Collette, Molly Shannon and Bridget Everett as four preschool moms who enjoy a rowdy night on the town sans children and husbands.
We’ve got an exclusive clip of a musical scene from their crazy Fun evening, where Aselton’s Emily hits the karaoke stage for a rendition of Nena’s 99 Luftballons (the part-German version, no less) and is joined by her pals while Levine (playing bartender Luke) hoots his approval.
Doing the scene gave Aselton nightmarish recollections of having to sing for a class in acting school: “They handed me a sheet of music and they said, ‘Could you sing this?’ and I started crying,” she recalls. “The idea of singing in front of a group of people is so anxiety-inducing, never mind singing in German in front of Adam Levine.”
At least she came prepared: Aselton wasn’t familiar with the 1980s one-hit wonder, but she sat and studied Luftballons with the lyrics in hand and even worked with a German tutor “to understand what the heck I was saying,” she says. By the time they filmed the scene, “it was so ingrained in me, I could do it without totally thinking about it.”
While she didn’t get any pointers from Levine, Aselton found the singer “a really sweet, wonderful guy,” she reports. “He was just an absolute dream — real generous with his time and energy, kind and did not judge my singing, which I really appreciated.”
Off screen, her official position is “I hate singing karaoke,” though one caveat to that is if she’s had a few adult beverages beforehand.
“I am the person who gets dragged to karaoke against my will, and I will sit and complain. And then I will have four cocktails and you cannot pry the microphone out of my hand by the end of the night,” Aselton says. “I’ll be the person who is singing Incubus — I will find any song where I can put in a comedic performance and make people laugh.”
