Grace VanderWaal has come back to America’s Got Talent! The 13-year-old singer won the competition last season. She took the stage on Wednesday to perform her latest single, ‘Moonlight.’ USA TODAY

Mandy Harvey amazed the audience and judges once again at the America’s Got Talent semi-finals Tuesday.

Harvey, who became deaf 10 years ago due to a connective tissue disorder, discussed her struggle with the hearing loss in a preview before her performance. She also said that music is what helps her get through those painful moments.

“Music doesn’t need sound — you just need heart,” she said in the clip.

Harvey took the stage with another original called Release Me. While her other songs have been beautiful in a quiet, gentle way, this one was louder and more bold, and Harvey’s facial expressions showed admirable confidence.

This time she left her ukulele behind, opting to sign the lyrics as she sang instead.

The addition of sign language to Harvey’s already powerful words brought the crowd and the judges to their feet.

“You transcend hearing,” Howie Mandell said. “You move us emotionally and that is more powerful than hearing a great tune. You make music more powerful than it is.”

Simon Cowell said the song was “honestly breathtaking,” even noting that it reminded him of the first time he heard Adele sing.

Still, Harvey has stayed humble throughout the process.

“I’m just happy that I got to express myself and sign,” Harvey said. “I’m honored and I get to be the first on the AGT stage to sign.”
